Free and Healthy Women – Empowered Women

As a man this should not be my topic of discussion. I am no way bothered and the women in my house manage this issue all by themselves. This is never discussed with me or even in front of me. Then what made me write this?

I am bothered about this issue because I am concerned about women empowerment in India and this issue is closely related to the empowerment issue. As a men’s rights activist I have always wondered why India is lagging far behind in terms of human development and comparable only to African countries today (source: UNDP human development report – http://parthasadhukhan.wordpress.com/2013/06/14/indias-human-development-vis-a-vis-the-globe/).

My study on this subject reveals that most of the factors leading to women empowerment and gender equality are closely linked with their education (can be seen in the above article). From the HDR it is clear that Indian women lack much needed secondary education and the need of the hour is to focus on the same. When I researched on the possible reasons why the education spread is less among women especially rural women I came across studies done by researchers like Prof. Linda Scott of Said Business School, Oxford.

Her research shows that post-pubescent girls were missing school as many as five days each month due to inadequate menstrual care. Other activities such as work, chores and playing with other children are also restricted. In rural locations the impact of menstruation upon the girls was particularly noticeable where there were no, or inadequate, toilet or washing facilities, no privacy, and the girls had walks of 2 hours or more to attend school.

There are other studies by Aruna Wilson and UNICEF that show the same result of girl students dropping out of the school for same health related reasons.

A country like India that is already reeling under poverty, many of our parents have no choice but to allow the girl child to drop out of school simply because they can’t afford to educate the girl child and maintain their health standards with proper sanitary napkins. It is because affording healthy Sanitary Napkins is Just Not Possible for most of the rural parents in India and that is the reason our women are not getting proper education.

My perception about this issue was changed when I saw this amazing video –

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQI0TngMm_0

This entirely changed my perspective to this issue and I felt the need to come forward to do something on this issue and make a positive change.

I felt that if a less educated, rural man like Muruganatham can make so much difference to this nation for a cause that may not directly bother men, why can’t I.

So as a man and a men’s rights activist who is bothered more about men’s issues, I feel compelled to educate everyone around me about the need of improving women’s health so that we have more education among our future mothers and make arrangements to provide for economic sanitary napkins to them. Only then we can stop wide spread notion that men in India do not respect women and will make a positive impact that even men can make a lot of difference to an issue that is known primarily as a woman’s issue.

Take a chill pill with Lenovo Yoga Tablet

I am an Engineer!

Because, there are plenty of Engineers nowadays I don’t call me an Engineer any more. I call myself an innovator, whose passion is innovation.

I have normal tablet PC that is good for some basic gaming experience with lot of limitations. I have always wondered how to get best tablet experience of a costly tablet with very nominal price. Well my Engineering brain came to my rescue.

Instead of going for a costlier tablet I have decided to modify my existing tablet with my innovative skills. So I decided to develop a prototype first.

I had my sleek computer monitor that came handy. I have decided to test the same under different conditions and check how my new idea will work in practice.

So I checked the monitor at diff angles and tested the resolution and effects on my eyes –

Tablet 1 Tablet 2 Tablet 3

Perfect!! This is what I was looking for. My innovation can bring in a new revolution. I patted my back.

The idea is nothing but to fit a stand like the computer monitor has in a tab –

Tablet 4

I thought of getting sleek legs for my tablet if this Design of Experiment is successful.

So, I have taken my new prototype to use in my dining area –

Tablet 5

Perfect!! This gives a sturdy stand and stands well on my glass dining table. This can also fit between two chairs when the family is taking dinner. There is enough space for water bottles and other food and beverages to be served.

Tablet 6

I checked it in my kitchen too. After all I may have to check some recipes ebook while cooking.

Tablet 7

The stand and the monitor fits on my kitchen floor well too. If the tab is smaller, it will definitely be wow. I patted my own back for saving so much money from buying an expensive tab and for thinking something innovative.

Lastly it was time to check on my bed. Many a times I want to chat with my friends while relaxing on my bed. So this is very important.

Tablet 8

This goes well with my pillows. I get an additional space to keep my neck. rather it would be neck rest while I chat with my friends. Looks like my innovation is successful. 🙂

I bring the monitor back to my study desk to check the final prototype and how it works on my study table with my books and a whole lot of other stuff being around..

I was just checking the same and about to conclude of using the prototype, then –

dharrrrrrrruuuuuuummm

Tablet 9

The legs could not withstand the experimentation. The monitor toppled over its leg and splashed everything around. Luckily my water bottle was not open. It didn’t spill water but surely spilled the beans of my creative mind.

Probably I needed to think more on how to make it sleeker and effective. Till then I decided to use what is available in market. Looked like Lenovo has already thought about our need of using the tablet in different postures and created a Yoga Tablet.

I decided to take a chill pill and use Lenovo pill (tablet) instead –

A non drinker’s experience with Bacardi Breezer

As a non drinker my knowledge of hard drinks is limited. My idea of an alcoholic beverage is when after a drink I feel my backyard is –

Ramoji 51

and my wife looks like –

Or when the animals around turns –

My dining table  –

When the trees in my backyard becomes –

or

and I become the happiest man in world-

I walk freely in air

and feel like, I am in –

Ramoji 19

Come let me share my experience with my first alcoholic beverage Bacardi Breezer..

Ramoji 12

First, I had to choose the flavor from the six choices company is providing. I could choose three after a lot of deliberation based on my personal preference.  My choices were – Vibrant Blackberry Crush, Enchanting Cranberry and Delicious Orange.

DSCN5886

To examine the best flavor out of the three and find out my choice is, I have tasted them in different conditions.

While reading English thrillers and novels –

With sweet romantic and patriotic Bengali poems –

Bacardi 4

Both of the above, added with different flavors of music

Bacardi 3

and while working on computers.

Bacardi 1

Apart from checking the flavor with different types of works of art, I have checked these with different tastes of side dishes, like I normally would like to do when I am free.

First I tried these flavors with and without Cashew nuts and a favorite Bengali snack chanachur

DSCN5900

and then with spicy hot pop corn

Bacardi 9

..and categorically noted my experience under all different conditions-

Bacardi 8

Noted and re-validated each note a second time and given weighted average score to each flavor to check with flavor goes well with my mood and taste bud –

Bacardi 7

….and finally the test ended after three days of packed action-

Bacardi 10

My heart and soul goes to the orange flavor. Even though all three flavors are awesome, the orange flavor and its sparkling rejuvenating taste creates a special thrill within me. This feeling enhances when I am listening to some romantic music or reading  romantic poems. Blackberry crush however goes well when I had very spicy murder mysteries or some hot side dish like chanachur.

But my normal daily activity of blogging, net surfing or reading regular novels is complimented well with Orange flavor. This flavor gives me all round experience that could think of when I thought of hard drinks. The flavor that reminds me of freshness and creates new inspiration for me to create something new. Hence the Orange flavor wins –

Creating Immune India

Creating a stronger, healthier and more immune India is not an easy task. It requires a lot of brainstorming and path breaking strategies to implement before we can even think of a naturally strong and healthy nation. Even though it is true that we need a stronger young generation to build a stronger nation but to give birth of a stronger and more immune babies we need more immune parents (good genes) to help create those babies. So to have an immune India we need to have widespread health awareness among all Indian citizens.

For any activity in a country like India that reels under so much superstition achieving anything is a Herculean task. We need to have long term goals and try all different avenues to bring in healthy habits to the citizens.

Health and immunity

Nature is a great leveler. It created living and non living things for a purpose. Our eco-system maintains the equilibrium of natural existence and it is the nature that provides us with the solution to all our problems. However, it is the human beings that is continuously breaking the natural norms and equilibrium and creating danger for all other living creatures.

Ancient Indian yogis have found out the natural secrets of survival in the practice of Ayurveda. Today the same techniques are shown by prominent international broadcasting channels as ‘Survival Strategies”. The trained daredevils who are mostly trainers of some national army go to any odd and difficult terrains in the world and show the viewers the tricks to survive the adverse forces of nature with the help of nature itself. This is nothing but that traditional knowledge that our yogis have provided over ages. To create a healthy and immune India we need to revive those best practices that our yogis have taught for years to survive even in most difficult conditions.

Ayurveda tells us about integrating body, mind and spirit rather than focusing on individual ailments and win over nature. Knowledge of yoga teaches us to control our mind and body in adverse conditions.

However, in this era of open economy where multinationals with deep pockets are vying for consumer mind always, it is difficult to make a considerable dent in the mind of the masses. So getting mass attention for a niche sector like Ayurveda with limited budget is extremely difficult. So to promote good healthy practices in India that is core to creation of an immune India, we need to explore different avenues in innovative ways to reach the masses.

Sports, Consumerism and Health

Jagadhhatri Puja 2013_86

Different sporting events are biggest awareness creators in India. If any sports legend endorses a product the sale of that product increases manifold among the fan followers. However, no endorsement ever comes free of cost. But small budget Ayurveda industry can not sustain this publicity. Hence we need to bring in practices that their coaches adopt and guide them to remain fit in their daily life. Good habits, food habits, daily routine etc. Even though the sports-persons are celebrities, their coaches are not that famous. But every Indian who worship these sports-persons and want to be like them will definitely follow the good practices once they know what these sporting legends do. (Remember that ad with Sachin Tendulkar promoting eating egg everyday to be strong?)

There are simple vegetable juices or herbs that can provide more strength and stamina to them or keep them free of toxins. If these are brought in front of these fans those who want to be like their superheroes will follow suit.

Health through spirituality

Immune India 7

Religion and religious festivals are another two methods of spreading the awareness among Indians. Due to our superstitious nature many Indians follow different religious rituals and listen to what these religious gurus speak. Our festivals, where a lot of people assemble are another great method of propagating awareness and creating good habits. These are two avenues that are not that costly and these avenues need to be adopted to spread good healthy practices. Events like Durga Puja and various other pujas in Kolkata that attract huge crowd can be a good booster for these best practices. In an era of theme puja, the puja organizers look for interesting themes to celebrate and this is the easiest and cheapest method to make anything popular.

Image_36Image_37  Image_40

Politics and politicians for health

Immune India 8

Apart from sports and religion, Indians are also moved by politicians and their political agendas. Different social groups have capability to move politicians and form their strategies. Already we have seen how the ‘sons of the soil’ theorists have gained popularity and gained ground in different states. These are the forces that can be used to create and form popular political agendas following Indian traditions and with a motive to promote Indianness.

Movies: the new religion, Actors: the new gods

For many Indians movies are religion and actors and superstars are the gods. These actors are not less than any athletes either. In today’s highly competitive movie industry actors too need to keep them fit and desirable to the masses. They do undergo yoga trainings or take herbal treatment free of any side effect. This is another media that appeals to the masses easily and effectively. To make any sizeable impact on the citizens we need to use movies and movie stars as well.

But this does come with a huge price tag. But creating a documentary may not be that costly. This documentary may be played during intervals. Celebrity endorsement or highlighting their life behind the reels is another method of sharing good practices.

Creating Brand India through traditions

Another popular method is to create brand India through this traditional knowledge and create worldwide popularity of this knowledge. Once we create global brands, this consumerist world is bound to accept these best practices. This will also help formulating different strategies to promote this industry.

Reaching one billion – not easy

Image_38  Immune India 6

India’s vast landscape and more than a billion populations is a major deterrent for making any activity reach all its citizens. Even if we can reach 70-80% of population in this way that can serve our purpose. Rest we need to depend on this educated population to spread through their word of mouth.

In short, it is not easy to create an Immune India. There is a lot of coordination needed in different fields. A lot of strategies need to be formed before we achieve a completely immune India but these strategies may help us reaching the masses but will never help in achieving the target of getting immune India.

The main problem being the reach of these products and also time to follow best practices like perform yoga on daily basis. Moreover, any such practice will need expert guidance for best results. Hence even though we can reach the masses they may not be able to follow these.

Creating immune India

Immune India 4

So we see that even if we break the hurdles of reaching one billion we will not be able to make them follow these practices due to many reasons. Most critical one is time constraint. In today’s difficult time, every individual is hard pressed for time and hence they will find it difficult to follow any practice unless they get some useful healthy habit for no loss of time. Health drinks and power tablets are solution for that. However, these come with side effects and may not be recommended for all.

The solution lies in products with no side effect and products that help achieve improved immune system with no time wastage. Dabur Chyawanprash is an easy solution for the same. Made from Ayurvedic herbs, this comes in various tasty flavors, and is a favorite for the children. This kind of products and awareness about their easy use will create an immune India. This will ensure that we have industrial growth and development keeping our world in mind. When that happens, we will grow healthy and strong as a nation.

Traditional Knowledge, Natural Growth

Human being and the Universe

Nature is a fantastic milieu of animal and other living creatures where the balance is always maintained by the eco system. Green plants and animals are bound by these unseen eco forces in a fantastic relation where both depend on each other to survive. This is the same relation that helped the animal kingdom fight all odds and survive for ages.

Image_72

Darwin’s theory ‘Survival of the Fittest’ takes us back to the stone-age where the human species started a never ending process of learning how to survive the brute forces of nature. Human brain found out ways to surpass all challenges that the nature had for them, because, if the nature has thrown challenges to them, it has also given them solutions in different forms. This is how we have learnt the magical powers of plants and vegetation around us in curing dreaded diseases, one of the most threatening challenges to our survival. So if we take nature along with us we will have easy survival.

Image_78

India had been a pioneer in extracting the natural wonders out of the leaves and plants around us and our Himalayas has given us plenty of those Ayurvedic wonders. We find the same in Ramayana, where Shri Hanuman had to bring whole of Gandhomadan to get the right herb to revive Lakshman.

Image_31

The concept of Ayurveda

The concept of Ayurveda (‘Ayur’ = Life and ‘Veda’ = knowledge) is older than even Vedas and Upanishads. Ayurveda considers every Human being as a microcosm and every living and non living beings in universe comprises of five elements called Pancha Bhutas. After our death we all get mingled in these Pancha Bhutas. Anno or food is considered as the cause of all our ailments and also health. Hence, Ayurveda focuses on integrating the body, mind and spirit rather than focusing on any symptom of ailment and promotes overall wellness. So, Ayurvedic herbs, metals, massages and other products are used to promote wellness or cleansing of body and mind and restoring the balance between the human body and the Universe.

Common Benefits of Ayurveda

Since Ayurveda is a naturotherapy this uses the nature to cure us and hence does not have any side effects or ill effects. Since nature is the source of all proteins, vitamins and all other mineral resources required for development of our body, mind and soul, Ayurveda helps us get cured holistically.

Since these natural resources help us grow, ayurvedic treatment helps us grow in all aspects and no wonder why it improves our natural appetite. Once our appetite improves we consume more food and hence get more growth.

Since this treatment compliments our body system with the nature and works on detoxification of mind, body and soul, it is harmless and anti toxin.

Children and Ayurveda

Children are the most coveted gifts to any parent and hence any parent would like to take utmost care to their own children. Every parent wants their child safe and secured in their personal life and wants them to grow in sound health and be in good health all through their life.

For proper growth and healthy and strong body every child needs proper nutrition. Nutrition can come through food in most of the times but there are certain types of nutrition that comes through other natural processes. Like intake of vitamin D or other minerals through skin or cleansing of body and mind from toxins through Ayurvedic massages.

Even though our internal system decides the overall well being of our body, our skin and eyes reflect what is going on inside our body. These are considered as mirrors to our body. Since Ayurveda considers overall well being and detoxification of our body and soul to ensure overall well being, apart from intake of Ayurvedic medicines, massages with Ayurvedic oils prove to be best for children in detoxification and intake of certain minerals and vitamins. All these are needed for proper growth of a child’s brain and bone strength.

A massage by an Ayrvedic oil like Dabur Lal Tail helps in a child’s growth as the oil massage improves blood circulation and bone strength. Also a thorough massage can improves sleeping patterns in children and adults alike. Presence of items like Ratanjyot helps protect skin infection as well.

These are natural growth factors and treatment that give a child necessary nutrition without any side effect. In earlier days mothers used the method of massaging with mustard or til or reri oil and used to keep the baby in sun for required vitamin D intake through sunlight. However, that practice is prohibited today due to the possibility of harmful ultraviolet rays harming the child. Availability of proper Ayurvedic massage oil that can give all the advantages without any ill effect if surely a boon for all parents. Once we have happy children, we will not only see their improved personal life but also an improved social life.

Children and Synthetic Products

Apart from ayurvedic massage children do need other things to use, for instance, shampoo, body lotion or shoes to wear. This is the market where we need processed products that will be free from artificial preservatives, synthetics, colorings, artificial fragrances etc. This is another growing market where traditional Ayurvedic knowledge can bring in wonders and this market is still to be explored completely in India.

There is a saying that ‘Morning shows the day’. When we provide the right growth factors at the initial days, coupled with nature,

Traditional Knowledge

we will be able to ensure complete nourishment and growth to our children and will have happy homes all around us.
